One of the most dangerous games we play with ourselves is the ‘what-if’ game. This can surface a lot of feelings of anxiety. Our brains are wired to protect us from danger so we naturally run all of the worst case scenarios in our head. But what if we flip the script? Begin to ask yourself, ’what if I succeed at this?’ Or ‘what if I close this deal?’ We then give our minds permission to brainstorm ways to bring those positive thoughts to fruition. The key factor in this is truly letting yourself know that everything will be okay if it doesn’t work out the way you want it to. At least you gave yourself the best chance or maybe you walk away feeling proud.
Perspective is a key ingredient into overcoming anxiety. Often times as a rep we feel like we are in a giant pressure cooker and there is no way out. Taking a step back and viewing it (being our situation or task at hand) from a birds-eye-view can be very relieving. Finding someone you trust or has similar experience/background can also be an excellent resource for a 3rd party perspective to help you see the bigger picture.
Not feeling in control can be like driving your car down the freeway and suddenly having the steering wheel taken away. This can come from deals not going our way or constant rejection. Whatever that might be trust that you are ALWAYS in control. The problem really comes from us being so tied to only one specific outcome and when things don’t go our way, our earth crumbles. Give yourself the grace that all of this is for experience and to help you on your next opportunity or your career path as a whole.
Fear can show up in many different ways: Fear of failure, fear of rejection, etc. When we allow fear to consume us or even just slightly creep in, we begin to shut down because we want to avoid the possibility of being a ‘failure’ or being rejected. The best thing that we can do is to foster a healthier relationship with those feelings of fear as well as reframe what we think it means to be a failure or rejected, etc.
